  1. How to Remove WinXP Splash and See Operations [hide] Are you having boot up problems and would like to know what it going on behind that Windows Loading Logo? To find out, you can disable the splash screen by making a small change to the Boot.ini file. Follow these steps (carefully!): 1. Open the "System Properties" dialog box ( Settings - Control Panel - System) 2. On the Advanced tab, click the Settings button in the "Startup And Recovery" section. 3. In the "Startup And Recovery" dialog box, select the Edit button in the "System Startup" section. 4. The Boot.ini file will open in Notepad; locate the line that ends with the /fastdetect switch. 5. Position your cursor to the right after the parameter, press the spacebar, and add the /SOS switch. 6. Save the Boot.ini file, and close Notepad. 7. Click Cancel to close both the "Startup And Recovery" dialog box and the "System Properties" dialog box. 8. Restart the computer to see the effect. Once the computer restarts you will notice that the Windows Splash Screen is no longer present. Instead you can observe some of the boot up operations that Windows XP performs during the startup stage. To renable the splash screen, follow the same procedure but remove the "/SOS". [/hide]

  3. How To Remove Signin Details Of Msn Passpor [hide] Question: When I sign onto Messenger in Windows XP, there's a drop-down menu of sign-addresses I can use. Is there a way to keep those addresses from appearing, so I have to type it in each time? Answer: Yes there is a way, although you will need to modify/create a key within the system registry. Open the Registry Editor, and navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Control\ Lsa Create a Value called "disabledomaincreds" and set it to "1". Reboot will finalise the process. Note: This is generally only usefull if you are setting up a system to be used by many users. Key Details: Machine Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Control\ Lsa] Value Name: disabledomaincreds Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value) Data Value: "1" = disable : "0" = enable Heres a faster, safe, alternate way: must be logged in as ADMIN Goto Start + Control Panel + User Accounts + Choose your account + "Manage my network passwords" at the top left + Then delete whichever msn accounts you don't need [/hide]
  4. How to recover MOST of scratched CD data discs [hide] I learn an old thecnique to how to recover damaged or scratched disks with some lost of data. In this case i have one borrowed game - MAX PAYNE 2 with a chunck of 4 mb lost with a scratch in CD1 Install. Here we cover some special thecniques of how to create a full working CD from the scratched one. First some tools will be needed: 1. Alcohol 120% 2. UltraISO 3. Windows XP/2000 (not tested on 95/98/me) 3. Small piece of cotton 4. Dry cleaner paper 5. Finally, oil for cooking. First step - preparing the CD Get the cotton and drop some water, start cleaning vertically the surface of CD. Do it 3 times and dry the water with a piece of dry cleaner paper. With a new piece of cotton, drop some oil for cooking and start to wet the surface like you are washing the CD with the oil. Dry carefully now. Some particles of oil will stay on the microsurface of the scrath. It's okay. Seems the oil helps the laser of the CD/DVD driver to read the surface again. Sure this will work with small unreadable scratchs - some hard scratchs loose parts of the surface of the CD where we have data and it's lost forever. But if it is loosed try anyway. Whith this tip 80% of the small scratched CD's coud be recovered. Second Step - testing the CD With Alcohol 120% make an ISO - image making wizard - and lets see if the app can read the loosed surface. In my case Alcohol 120% had recovered 60% of the data. This is not enough. Have tryed other appz, they do not recover all the data. But the CD/DVD driver laser CAN recover all data in this case. the data is still there, what we do? third step - making the new CD With the main copy system of windows explorer you can do it. Just create one folder with the same name of the CD label for future burn reference, and copy the CD content to the folder. When the CD copy process find the scratch, in majority of the cases, it's slow down the reading and will recover ALL loosed data.If not, it just tell you there's an unreadable sector. In this case your CD is lost. But it's not my case, finally windows explorer got all the data from the scratch and made a copy in the folder. with the ultraISO, wrote the original CD label, drop the content of the folder and save as Iso. You can Test the new CD just mounting the iso in the Alcohol 120%. In my case i did ISO of the two discs from MAX PAYNE 2 and tested installing from the mounted ISO. Works like a charm. I got the 4 mb lost again. So, I have burned the CD and now i have a working copy from the scratched one. Sounds too bizzarre, but works. Course you can jump the cleaning process and try to copy the content with Windows explorer. But in my case did not work without oil... [/hide]

  7. How to build a black box [hide] A BLACK BOX is a device that is hooked up to your phone that fixes your phone so that when you get a call, the caller doesn't get charged for the call. This is good for calls up to 1/2 hour, after 1/2 hour the phone Co. gets suspicious, and then you can guess what happens. What this little beauty does is keep the line voltage from dropping to 10v when you answer your fone. The line is instead kept at 36v and it will make the fone think that it is still ringing while your talking. The reason for the 1/2 hour time limit is that the phone CO. thinks that something is wrong after 1/2 an hour of ringing. All parts are available at Radio Shack. Using the least possible parts and arangement, the cost is $0.98 !!!! And that is parts for two of them! Talk about a deal! If you want to splurge then you can get a small PC board, and a switch. There are two schematics for this box, one is for most normal fones. The second one is for fones that don't work with the first. It was made for use with a Bell Trimline touch tone fone. ** Schematic 1 for most fones ** ** LED ON: BOX ON ** FROM >--------------------GREEN-> TO LINE >--! 1.8k LED !---RED--> FONE !--///--!>--! ! ! ------>/<------- SPST Parts: 1 1.8k 1/2 watt resistor 1 1.5v LED 1 SPST switch You may just have two wires which you connect together for the switch. ** Schematic 2 for all fones ** ** LED ON: BOX OFF ** FROM >---------------GREEN-> TO LINE >------- ---RED--> FONE ! LED ! -->/<--!>-- ! ! ---///--- 1.8k Parts: 1 2 watt resistor 1 1.5v LED 1 DPST switch Here is the PC board layout that I recommend using. It is neat and is very easy to hook up. Schematic #1 Schematic #2 ************** **************** * * * ------- * * ----- * * ! ! * * ! ! * * ! * * RESISTOR ! * * ! ! ! * * ! ! * * ! ! / * * -------- ! * * ! ! * * ! ! * * ! ! / * * --SWITCH-- * * ! ! * * ! ! * * ! ! / * L * ! ! * F L * ! ! ! * F I>RED- -RED>O I>RED- ---RED>O N>-----GREEN---->N N>-----GREEN------>N E * h * E E * * E ************** **************** Once you have hooked up all the parts, you must figure out what set of wires go to the line and which go to the fone. This is because of the fact that LED's must be put in, in a certain direction. Depending on which way you put the LED is what controls what wires are for the line & fone. How to find out: Hook up the box in one direction using one set offor line and the other for fone. *NOTE* For Model I switch should be OFF. *NOTE* For Model ][ switch should be set to side connecting the led. Once you have hooked it up, then pick up the fone and see if the LED is on. If it is, the LED will be lit. If is doesn't light then switch the wires and try again. Once you know which are which then label them. *NOTE* - If neither directions worked then your lable the switch in its current position as BOX ON. How to use it: The purpose of this box is for poeple who call you not to pay so it would make sence that it can only be used to receive! calls. When the box is *ON* then you may only recieve calls. Your fone will ring like normal and the LED on the box will flash. If you answer the fone now, then the LED will light and the caller will not be charged. Hang up the fone after you are done talking like normal. You will not be able to get a dial-tone or call when the box is on, so turn the box *OFF* for normal calls. I don't recommend that you leave it on all the time, as you don't want it to answer when Ma Bell calls! Hope it brought something to those who read it. [/hide]
  8. Many apply a registry tweak to have notepad as an option for unknown file types. We frequently see such files which are actually just text, but named with some odd file-extension. And then, some suspicious files which we want to make sure what the contents are. Well, in such cases where the registry tweak is applied, the downside happens to be that even some known files get associated with notepad - but no, all we want is to be able to open a file with notepad - the association part in such cases is unwanted interference. Also, notepad becomes a permanent fixture on the right-click menu - which is again an annoyance. So what we do, is to have notepad as an option in the Send-To options, of the right-click menu in explorer. It fulfils the purpose to perfection (atleast, in my case). Here's what we do: [hide] 1. right-click desktop, choose "New >> Shortcut" 2. Type the location of the item - "notepad" - (that's all, no need to give path) 3. Next >> type name for shortcut - "Edit with Notepad" 4. Click finish 5. Now right-click this shortcut on the desktop, and choose properties. 6. Confirm that the "target" and "start in" fields are using variables - "%windir%\system32\notepad.exe" - (absolute paths will be problematic if you use this .LNK on machines other than your own) 7. Now, browse to "%UserProfile%\SendTo" in explorer (which means "C:\Documents and Settings\User_Name\SendTo\" folder) 8. And copy the "Edit with Notepad.lnk" file which you already created, to that folder. 9. So now, you can right-click on ANY file-type, and be offered an option to open with notepad, from the SendTo sub-menu. So now, you just right-click on an .nfo or .eml or .diz file (which are associated with other programs, and are sometimes just plain-text files), and choose "Send To >> Edit with Notepad" and it will open in notepad! No more botheration of applying registry tweaks for something as simple as this. [/hide]

  13. Like the BrTurbo links... there's a little bit to know what the links from Yahoo/Geocities do... or how they work... Maybe this can be pinned here as the BrTurbo post thread is posted here as well !? [hide] =================================== The Beginning : You must use a downloading program like flashget. 150+ Kbps download speeds There is a lot of people downloading from these servers so don't be surprised if it's hard to get the files lickity split, it will take time, maybe up to 24hours or longer. Error 503 (Service Temporarily Unavailable), 508 (Unused) or 999 (Not available) will be a Normal Response ( Error 404 is the only response you DON'T want = File deleted ) The following are tips for downloading from Yahoo/Geocities, you will get what you want quicker and easier by following them. A few restrictions that I've figured out by downloading from the Y/G servers: You Must only use 1 jet (split part) per file, each extra jet added acts like a separate file and you will have to do the IP change more often (see below). Example: file.zip with 8 jets or split parts seems like 8 separate files to the server yet you've only downloaded 1 file (IP change range 10 to 15 files) If you don't mind changing your IP every 5 minutes then use all the jets you want, LoL but I recommend just leaving at 1 jet per file. (MOST Important) You MUST change the Referrer on every file so it is Blank, if it isn't set correctly you will get a 403 (forbidden error) (Tip from DarkKnightz) _____________________________________________________________________ The next section in most cases won't need to be read, But if you do have a problem come back and read the rest, LoL _____________________________________________________________________ Your downloads will stop at times with a code 999, 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable or 508 Unused, be patient it will restart but give it some time, But if it doesn't restart after 10 or so retries try pausing the download for 5 to 15 minutes, or move on to another file and come back to it later. Keep bouncing around because sooner or later they will start. Most times if you pause your downloads for 5 to 15 minutes, they will restart, But this is a last resort (IP Change) Before doing this make sure you gave the files plenty of retries (approximately 25 No starts) If No more of the files will start downloading and your getting a 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable, 508 Unused or 999 Not available, all you need to do is change your IP number. #1 by re-dialing (Dial-up) OR #2 disconnect your modem from the net (disconnect your modem in the setup interface) for about 30 seconds, reconnect the modem and you'll have a new IP. Unless you have a static IP, in which you'll have to use proxies like with BRTurbo to evade the max bandwidth restriction. Any files that continue to be a problem Re-check to make sure you have the proper referrer set, if they're all OK then you may have to wait a few hours and start where you left off. If you have a static IP use a proxy like when you download from BRTurbo links.[/hide]

  16. There are a lot of PC users that know little about "Spyware", "Mal-ware", "hijackers", "Dialers" & many more. This will help you avoid pop-ups, spammers and all those baddies. [hide] [align=center] What is spy-ware?[/align] Spy-ware is Internet jargon for Advertising Supported software (Ad-ware). It is a way for shareware authors to make money from a product, other than by selling it to the users. There are several large media companies that offer them to place banner ads in their products in exchange for a portion of the revenue from banner sales. This way, you don't have to pay for the software and the developers are still getting paid. If you find the banners annoying, there is usually an option to remove them, by paying the regular licensing fee. Known spywares There are thousands out there, new ones are added to the list everyday. But here are a few: Alexa, Aureate/Radiate, BargainBuddy, ClickTillUWin, Conducent Timesink, Cydoor, Comet Cursor, eZula/KaZaa Toptext, Flashpoint/Flashtrack, Flyswat, Gator, GoHip, Hotbar, ISTbar, Lions Pride Enterprises/Blazing Logic/Trek Blue, Lop (C2Media), Mattel Brodcast, Morpheus, NewDotNet, Realplayer, Songspy, Xupiter, Web3000, WebHancer, Windows Messenger Service. If you have alot of ram (i.e. 1 gig and over) set this swap file to something small, like 250 mb. The reason is that this will force Windows to load more into memory, resulting in faster performance (note: some games and applications actually require a certain sized swap file so check your applications performance after making a size adjustment for any error messages.) 7. Under XP, you can tell Windows to use Classic Style on your desktop, - this will remove the neat single click and internet-style desktop but for lower end systems this will improve performance in other areas, such as gaming and multi-tasking. 8. Run msconfig and under startup and only keep the programs that are essential to load in the tray icon (and hence stay resident in memory). Uncheck anything else non-essential, like an ATI or Nvidia control panel, Quicktime utility, Real Audio, etc. 9. Upgrade drivers! Check for the latest BIOS, video, motherboard, sound, etc drivers from the manufacturers. Alot of my friends had chipsets on their motherboard that had advanced disk management capabilities or AGP port settings but the drivers weren't loaded for them so they were never being used. A simple upgrade realized a noticeable difference. For instance, they didn't have the latest driver for their AGP port so it was set to 1x, instead of being used at 4x! 10. (OK, so this won't speed up your PC but it could save you alot of time and trouble later on!) After making all these improvements, make a working backup! I use Ghost, but for XP users you can also use System Restore... -FOR ADVANCED USERS- 1. Take a look under the hood (for IDE owners). How are your IDE devices configured? If you have more than 1 hard drive, put the master hard drive on the primary IDE channel and the secondary hard drive on the secondary IDE channel (most motherboards have two IDE channels). 2. Place all CDROM drives, DVD readers etc. on the secondary IDE channel (or SCSI bus, etc). This will reduce I/O contention with your master hard drive which should have your OS and apps installed... 3. Remember when I mentioned the location of the swap file? OK, if you have 2 hard drives and you have one on the primary IDE channel and the other on the secondary IDE channel, move the swap file to a partition ON THE SECOND hard drive (on the secondary IDE channel). This will greatly improve system performance as the PC can write to the swap file while loading and running OS and system commands without I/O contention on the primary IDE channel! 4. Take a look under the hood (for SCSI owners) What kind of SCSI do you have? If it's the newer Ultra 160/320 etc cards then guess what? Any devices placed on the same bus will automatically default to the slowest drive on the chain...this means that if you have say, an Ultra 160 SCSI card, and it has an Ultra 160 drive (capable of transferring 160 mb/sec) on the same chain as a SCSI cdrom drive (capable of only 40 mb/sec) then the whole bus slows down to the 40 mb/sec speed...use different chains for the slower devices and maximize those hard drives! 5. Run a utility like WCPUID and check the settings...is your CPU/front speed bus/AGP port running as fast as they should be? If not, check your drivers and BIOS configuration options. Also, are all of your chipset features enabled? If not, then enable them! (usually done in your BIOS!) 6. Dig in to the BIOS...check settings like boot order, for example...is it checking the floppy first? Change this! Select your order to reflect the hard drive first, then CD, then floppy for a noticeable boot time improvement. Also disable any non-used on board peripherals...for instance, - does your motherboard come with an on-board NIC card? Guess what, if you don't use that NIC card and it is enabled it will eat up valuable CPU cycles and can be detrimental to your systems' performance. DISABLE THAT MUTHA! Also, see if you can play with memory timing and CPU clock frequencies (NOTE! This is for expert users only!) Set these timings to "Aggressive" and see what happens in your games and apps...Also, check to see what your video aperature is set to. If you have a video card with 128 megs of on-baord memory, your aperature should be set to this amount too. Read the BIOS owner manual for further non-general performance tricks or improvements! Do you have the latest BIOS firmware version? 7. Under hardware properties, check to see that everything is working properly, and fix any hardware contention issues. You'll see the dreaded yellow exclamation point (!) beside any hardware componenet that is not working correctly. 8. Evaluate the potential for system/hardware upgrades...usually, the best bang for the buck is adding memory so buy all that you can afford (don't go much above 512 megs for Win 98 or ME). If you have a motherboard with an 8x - capable AGP port but you are using an older 4x video card, consider upgrading to an 8x card. You get the idea here... 9. Quit using software pigs like Norton system utilities, etc. These place files everywhere and can be a real system resource hog on lower end PCs. 10. Did I mention to make a good backup? Do it now! Also, while you're at it, run a good virus program with the latest definitions. There are more options to make your system faster, such as overclocking, etc. but (just about) everything I've mentioned in this tech post costs you nothing and will result in faster system performance! Good luck and if you have any questions on how to do anything mentioned here, ask a knowledgeable friend or consult a book, - don't mess up something trying to do something you are not sure of! Good luck and I'd like to dedicate this post to all of WorldWarez which has given me so much! You're all great, peeps![/hide]

On the next window, only choose "Include this location in the search", then click "Browse" 8. In the "Browse for folder" window, click on the folder you unzip "p2k_driver", then click "OK", then "Next" 9. Windows will search for the driver in that folder, and it is there ....BUT..... 10. A window pops up: "The software you are installing for this hardware: Motorola USB Modem has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. (Tell me why this is important.{XP says this, I am not asking it}) Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the hardware wendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing." Click "Continue Anyway" 11.
